The Cupboard is Bare, As Is My Brain

Source
The heat of summer can be enervating, especially when one is in trail with a lawnmower.

After three weeks of lots of heat and not a lot of rain, the grass wasn't so much high as it was ragged.

So I waited until the outside temperature got closer to 80 than 90, then donned my working attire and set forth to cut the front yard.

It's done, I had a Guinness to celebrate than repaired to the dining room to consume a roast beef sandwich, with horse radish sauce, of course.

That being done, I thought about the blog.

Brain said, "Nope, not today pal."

So here we are ...

Juvat will be up tomorrow, and we'll get back with the Armée du Nord on Tuesday. They're camped on the frontier with Belgium, waiting for the word to advance.

Hopefully the Emperor can round up his stray marshals and get things going.

Wellington and Blücher ain't gonna wait forever.

Damn, I miss the beach.

Ciao!

  2. Woke up this morning and the temp is 74, going to mid-90s today into Tuesday with extreme heat warning and the dewpoint is mid-70s? Grass is only growing in the shade so spotty mowing here later this week. First two drinks after that chore is aqua Sarge........:)

    3. Water and carbs to replace all the energy you used up pushing/trailing the mower!!

    4. Good point, I tend to take a break in the middle and drink water, Poland Spring to be exact.

  3. Sounds like a great schedule. I'll happily skip the lawn cutting part, or watch the hired help accomplish that. But the rest sounds perfect!

    1. I miss the days when I paid someone to cut the grass. Might need to revisit that.

    2. Paid yard guys usually want a full season commitment, not now and then. But, it ensures the yard looks the same when you are at the beach or listening to the Muse whisper in your ears. With lights on timers, the house looks lived in regardless of where you have chosen to be.

    3. Yes, I used to have a crew. Miss them, covid killed their business.

  4. Sarge, I feel somewhat guilty that our temperature is currently 55 F and expected to "spike" at 78 F today.

I completely understand the cupboard being bare. I find I am writing more in chunks now to alleviate a little bit of the coming up with something "every day".

    1. I feel like I'm losing the desire to write. Which concerns me.

    2. There are probably a half dozen books that you read and reread that gave you the desire to write. It's time to take a few days and reread one or two of them in a quiet spot and get back in touch with the words that meant something. It's funny how just a well turned phrase in a manner not seen in this century or even the last is sometimes all it takes to put pen back on the paper and go again. I don't think we ever run out of words.

Also, don't worry about it. Nobody here is going to drop dead if you take a couple of days or a week off from time to time. It's not like you get paid to perform. Drive up to Providence and say "hi" to my nephew. Drive over to Newport and take a gentle stroll from Bailey's Beach over to Easton Beach. Pack a lunch and some drinks.

Remember, you are retired and you have places to go and people to see. Enjoy!

  5. After saying that you miss the beach, the question in the back of your mind (it was in my mind when I uttered that) might be "how much do I miss it?".

    2. There's something about our little spot on the Chesapeake that I can never forget.

  6. I can't speak to the Chesapeake beaches, but the beach in Old Saybrook CT is pretty nice so far...of course it is supposed to be mid 90's midweek, and while the cottage comes with LOTS of fans (like 2-3 to a room) there is no air conditioning...so the vote is to go out for dinner whatever day is supposed to be the hottest next week. But the sandbars are currently very nice, and there is a bit of a breeze.

    Beach days are the Best!!

  7. We have been visiting this beach since the seventies. I have pictures of the kids sitting at the end of the waves (about two inches of water) eating what looks like a Dove bar. What a horrible mess (chocolate, sand seawater and diapers), but a mess I wouldn't have missed. After fifty years of visiting, we moved.
Left one beach (Santa Cruz) where the commies took over the town election, by election and made it just to the left of San Francisco. To Ormond by the Sea - it is just that.
Hard to decide. Hard to leave home. Just as well, we couldn't afford it now, anyway.
This old man yearns for a small patch of dirt to play with. That's all.
