First off, I went wild Monday morning and changed the header to what you see above. It was one of the three choices offered the other day and the one which received the most votes. As I am the Head Man What Be in Charge (HMWBIC) around these parts, it was my call. So I made it. Instant replay (which I also control) says that I made the right call. (Yeah, yeah, YMMV.)
I also went "live" with the Hall of Honor page (see the blue arrow in the opening graphic). That page contains the folks who used to be featured on the header. I intend to add more pages to that area as new heroes are added. I already have a list of candidates, some suggested by you, the readers, and some from older posts. You'll see, eventually, this kind of thing is a fair bit of work, dontcha know? (Note that comments aren't allowed on those pages, I don't want to give potential trolls an opportunity to be, well, trolls.)
Now originally only Lex and Buck were going to be on all of the new headers. But then I realized that there was another fellow who merited inclusion with Lex and Buck. That would be one Major Edward Rasimus, USAF, or just "Ras" as some of us knew him. (I never met the man in life but did stop by his grave at Arlington to leave a nickel on the grass.) He belongs up there for so many reasons. (The white arrow.)
All that being said, I have also decided to go with a rotating series of headers which will include the other two headers I showed in that linked post above. But, hang onto your hats, I have created a bunch of other potential headers to be included in the rotation, they are -
1807, Friedland by Ernest Meissonier - In addition to being one of my favorite paintings, I think it makes for a pretty neat header. I mean we're not all aviation, all of the time. We do historical stuff as well, so it fits.
Tanks, who doesn't like tanks? Other than juvat that is...
Warships!
The two prettiest aircraft ever to take to the air.
Hey, it's an old-timey library. With old-timey guys standing around looking intellectual. Just like Your Humble Scribe, juvat, Tuna, and Beans. Yeah, just like that...
Well we do review books, occasionally.
Music, we do music! (I think the guy on the left is juvat, the guy with the hat? Tuna? Maybe?)
(Source) |
So let me know. If you have any suggestions, let me know as well. I can always
Had to "shoot" a troll yesterday on juvat's Monday post. "It" stopped by, made some snarky comment about Newton and Bernoulli (vis-a-vis lift, I'm sure) said that juvat got it wrong, then said "bye bye." I have no tolerance for "Unknown" commenters like that who don't leave a name. I mean a regular could get snarky and I wouldn't mind. Of course a regular would point out what juvat did (or did not) get "wrong." I thought about leaving the comment, but decided that it was too vague and snotty. So...
Get off my lawn.
Perhaps "It" will return with an explanation and an apology. Though I rather doubt it...
Anyhoo...
Nose back to the grindstone.
Oh wait, here's an awesome guitarist (with a tip o' the hat to Diogenes Middle Finger). Samantha plays a mean guitar. I've watched a bunch of other videos of her over at the Tube of You. Man, the lady can play! (Her band ain't too shabby either!)
Now, it's back to aligning the nose with the grindstone...
HMWBICUWSU (... Until Wife Shows Up :) )
ReplyDeleteHeh. Good point.
DeleteHMWBIC.
DeleteHWWBOHMWBIC - Head Woman who be in charge of Head man what...
Hahaha!
DeleteWoohoo! Excellent choices Sarge. 1807 is also a favorite, makes a person feel like charging into the day hoping there's no infantry square about. Tanks again!
ReplyDelete😁
DeleteAwww... I didn't read the trollment; but in a sense, he is right. Neither Bernoulli nor Sir Isaac make an airplane fly, no matter what the circumstances... It's that great American, Benjamin Franklin who makes my mistress (N1868T) fly. Without no Benjamins, she ain't a flyin'. :)
ReplyDeleteI've experimented extensively about this. And one freshly remanufactured engine and tuned-port exhaust system later, I can attest that even Benjamin can't make it fly, if you don't have a spare Benjamin or two sitting in your pocket eager to undergo that chemical reaction where paper and ink are turned into 100-octane low-lead, blue-tinted dead dinosaurs...
So it really is about the Benjamins?
DeleteNo money, no fuel, no lift. I get it.
In many respects....he ain't wrong!
DeleteTrue dat.
DeleteO By the Way (tm). I love ALL the mast heads! :) Well done, Sarge!
ReplyDeleteJim.
Thanks Jim. No doubt my fevered brain will think of more. Like where are the battleships/carriers/wooden ships & iron men? What no Phantoms? No Eagles? No Warthogs? No Thuds? I can go on and on...
DeleteBetter Be some Eagles!!!!!!! And Phantoms!!!! and Thuds!!!!
DeleteJus sayin'
Patience grasshopper...
DeleteThese will be things to be looked forward to!
ReplyDeleteI'm still looking to build a header which has the Big Badger Boat or one of her sisters.
DeleteI have to say I will miss your old header because for me that was the trademark of Chant Du Depart and occasionally I liked looking through what I called the "Hall of Heroes". But you WERE running out of room because it inevitably kept growing. A rotating header is a good idea with some great choices and I'll adjust. Maybe use the "Hall of Heroes" for one of the rotating headers?
ReplyDeleteI miss it as well, but everybody you remember is at the new link. I felt the need for something new...
DeleteNot a bad idea including the old header now and then.
That old header was kind of a trademark, but there are the three guys on the new header who tie back to the old header.
Thanks for the idea Russ!
All of the proposed new headers are great, with the exception of that pic right before the nuclear explosion - those two guys are very scary looking and would scare off new potential readers!!! Your traffic stats would suffer on days with that as the header! But the one before it, with the mandolin player, should be fine.
ReplyDeleteAnd I assume the header with the ship won't have an LCS featured, ever!
Hahaha!!
DeleteAs to LCS, never, never, never, never!!!!
Headers!
ReplyDeleteThey just get in the way of what we all really arrive here for (or, for Buck, for that which we arrive).
They’re basically a landmark that tells us we’re in the right place.
Yeah, I like them all.
The skinnier the better.
Less scrolling, more reading ...or viewing , as the case may be.
Head it however you want, just don’t screw up the content.
Just sayin’
Hopefully the content will stay at the level you've come to know and love.
DeleteYes, there was some sarcasm in there...
I'm liking the mastheads and the links to the old pictures that we have become so enamored of. No Phantom smoke anywhere. Well, OK, it's time for me to move on. I'm into the Dragon Space Vehicles now. A lot of what I dreamed about as an eleven year old is become reality. Probably won't get a ride.
ReplyDeletePhantoms will come. And Thuds. And Warthogs. And WWII piston engined goodness. And other stuff...
DeleteHell, now I should probably have a header which feature infantry. (Or at the very least combat engineers for WSF. 😉)
Damn, I need artillery too!!
It was me. The debate of whether it's Newton of Bernoulli has raged since the beginning. I'm pretty sure the Wrights had a knock-down, drag-out about it. Anyway, I thought all pilots had the inside knowledge of the debate. But yeah, it's the 5th force ($$$) which makes the magic happen.
ReplyDeleteThat my comment was anon was smarmy.
Rick
Glad you came back Rick, much better comment this go 'round, now I gotta read up on this Newton v Bernoulli thing. 😁 Thou art no longer a troll as thou hast come into the light and given us knowledge. (Which is sometimes scary for this old sarge.)
DeleteThe 5th force ($$$) must be satisfied before all of that scientific stuff can have an effect...
For the record, I saw the following article a few moments ago:
ReplyDeletehttps://apple.news/A0Zc9zaiHRXqIyH2c_aHCtQ
Can't read it on a PC.
DeleteTry this:
Deletehttps://www.scientificamerican.com/article/no-one-can-explain-why-planes-stay-in-the-air/
Wow! Nice article.
DeleteI like all the headers. I bet you can match them up with the random thoughts of the day, or just go ahead and schedule them on some sort of autorotation (a little helo bubba humor there;-)) either by the day,or hour or minute when people log in.
ReplyDeleteIt's your place, so paint it whatever color pleases you.
John Blackshoe
Heh, autorotation, I see what ya did there.
DeleteI haven't looked into the possibility of making the header change itself, which would be kinda cool. I'll have to look into that, thanks for the idea John!
Late to the party but what a fun post. You've done some serious work Sarge. It's cool to see hints of what you're thinking and watching the header space evolve.
ReplyDeleteAs for the "troll," now you're left with a glowing hole in your lawn! I'm sure it's not as amusing as I think it is, but the "what makes it fly" argument has been a third rail since, like, forever. It's a fun discussion, mostly because while we can describe the aerodynamics we simply don't understand the whole thing. Constant trial and error has taken us to the point where we've got the what works suitcased in many regimes but the exact why remains elusive and for all intents and purposes indistinguishable from magic.
For some reason I'm taken by the painting of the Flemish garage band.
Fun and cool post!
Now I gotta patch that hole in the lawn, the guy came back, apologized (after a fashion), with a much better comment and this time with a moniker. Added to my knowledge he did.
DeleteRemember, I was an aircraft maintainer, it's all magic, and sweat, lots of sweat keeping those things up in the air.
Flemish garage band, now that is too funny. I like it!
