The Fourth Rail, So to Speak ...

(Source)

All young officers learned that there were three subjects not appropriate to discuss in the wardroom: anything to do with religion, politics or sex.

I'll add a fourth - Any and all events leading up to the conflict which took place on American soil from 1861 to 1865 and the conflict itself.¹

What you believe and what you'll argue for are based almost completely on where you were born and raised.

Just sayin' ...

¹ You could argue that that's politics, but it encompasses so much more.

Editor's Note: Yes, I turned off commenting on the earlier post, shit was getting out of hand.

  1. We're not in a wardroom, so I can feel free to argue about it here? HAHA! I wouldn't dare.

  2. How about civics? ;-)

  3. Soo....that ended pretty much like I thought it would. On the bright side, two posts from Sarge today.

This is why we cannot have nice things.

    1. Yeah, I'm surprised it took so long. When non-regulars starting chiming in, it was time to shut it down.

  4. So I'll say it here: government does not grant rights, government is always trying to take rights away so they can "give" (that is sell) you them as privileges.

Rights are held in the face of goverment trying to take them away. If you need permission or permit or allowances or ... they have a long list of names for this ... it's all selling you something they stole from you.

    1. Concur. Our Liberties are given by God. Our Republic was instituted as a guarantor, NOT grantor of those Liberties. How far we have strayed -or allowed our government to stray - is a travesty that would horrify our Founders.
As to the topic of this post, I will say only at this point that my take on those events has changed dramatically as I read more history, live longer and contemplate more.

    2. The constant search for truth, I seem to learn something new everyday. And feel it's still not enough to reach a true understanding of those days.

    3. I grew up in the West; we didn't have a dog in that fight. I grew up in the orthodoxy of "Lincoln saved the Union"; my own read now is considerably different.

    4. What we learned when we're young was vastly simplified.

  5. Goodness, I send my computer to the shop for a tune up and I miss the action of the day?

Only thing I can add to this thread is substitute Christmas party for wardroom if you'd like a nice start to 2024.

2023, whew what a ride. Oh, I forgot there's still some days left.... Crossing myself.

Merry Christmas friends, remember the reason for the season and it's not MasterCard.

  6. Sarge, thank you for the table you set every day. Reasonable discussions, no personal attacks. Merry Christmas and hopefully we'll have a New Year. BTW, I grew up in middle Tennessee in the 60's. Our field trips were to ACW sites. The past is not gone.

    2. Let us, indeed. Let us prepare for the New Year we're likely to see.
      That said, Merry Christmas!
