I remember what that felt like, though it be a year in the past.
I just thought I'd jump in here and say hi while Beans entertains you with Christmas music. Speaking of Christmas music, here's one based on a poem by Longfellow, written during the Civil War when the country was being torn apart. (Tip o' the hat to Brian up in Minnesota.)
Never despair, God's in control ...
Longfellow wrote this on Christmas Day, 1863, here are the original words ...
Christmas Bells
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
Till ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said;
"For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men."
Peace be with you, now and always.

What a great Christmas Carol! Don't think I've heard it, well done! Merry hristmas to all!
ReplyDeleteI'd never heard it before today either. I really like it.
DeleteSarge, I think you forgot about my post from the wayback- Wadsworth was mentioned: https://oldafsarge.blogspot.com/2021/12/post-christmas-post.html
DeleteI'm an old man, I'm confused.

HAHA!

DeleteThere's a very good movie, by a Christian studio, called "I Heard the Bells," which tells the story of HWL and the events leading up to writing the poem, and then years later when the song was first performed. Highly recommend it. Worth owning on DVD.
ReplyDeleteThere are no big-name talent. And the acting is better than what is found coming out of Hollyweird.
And the actual story? It's told, warts, moles and all. One scene is, thankfully, not portrayed too graphically but anyone with a lick of sense will have a serious empathetic panic attack.
Highly recommend. It's good enough for teenagers but some of the subjects may not be for young kids. Definitely a 'mature' movie. One of those movies that will have the watchers talking about it afterwards.
And now I think I know what I'm going to watch tonight.
👍
DeleteHave a splendid time!
ReplyDeleteWill do.
DeleteGlad to hear you are safely arrived and ensconced, Sarge!
ReplyDeleteI am reading through a 31 day book on Christmas Carols. I am reminded every time I read it that Longfellow wrote this, something that always surprises me.
Really surprised me as well. The song feels appropriate for his day and age.
