I Am ...

OAFS Photo
... the Gardener, or Landscaper, if you will.

For a number of years I had a crew to do the yard. The first one was put out of business by Covid (ahem). Primarily because their truck broke down and with the rising cost of everything, replacing it wasn't going to happen. Not to mention that the price of fuel would have cost them business as they would have to raise their prices.

Second crew was actually one guy, he was great, then he hurt his back, badly.

So now I am the crew. I break the lawn problem into two pieces (days if you will), front yard one day, back yard the next. Sometimes there's a two day lapse between front and back. Why, you ask.

Because I can.

I was in fine fettle on Wednesday, or as they say in Germany, Mittwoch, literally midweek. I had knocked out the front yard on Tuesday and tackled the back on Wednesday. Each day, once I had downed tools, I treated myself to an adult beverage ...

My youngest kid brother, The Musician, had provided me with that IPA for my natal day earlier in the month. I had two left, so I consumed one on Tuesday, the other on Wednesday.

Not too hoppy for an IPA, it seemed to me to taste "just right." Went down smooth it did, eased the aches and pains of slinging the string trimmer and chasing the mower around for an hour and a half.

The grin was warranted, it was a good day!

Life is good if you let it be. Being retired is awesome though I do really miss my old comrades. Did the breakfast thing with them last Saturday, found myself pining for the lab afterwards. The Missus Herself suggested "volunteer work," I said ...

"Sure, if it involves naval combat systems."

Forty nine years of being either in the military or involved with the military is hard to shake. I feel like an old war horse who snorts and paws the ground every time hears a trumpet.

So now I throw myself into landscaping, hey, it gets me outside!

The gate to the vegetable garden. Kind of a big gate for such a wee garden, but I like it.

Besides which, you can't beat the view in the garden, peaceful it is. I can almost imagine that the world doesn't exist beyond there.

Ciao!

  1. That backyard is looking good Sarge, being self-employed means you get to decide when the job gets done and what sort of uh....payment there is.......:)

    1. I work cheap around the house. A beer usually suffices.

  2. Sarge, your yard looks fabulous, well done!

And…you get a cold beer as a reward! Ain’t life grand?

    1. The Missus Herself gets full credit for the garden. I just get to enjoy it. She puts a LOT of work into the gardens.

  3. Beer in a can? I will pass on that. I prefer it out of a bottle or on tap. It also needs to be a Hefeweizen beer. Germany ruined me on IPA's and pilsners. When I was in the Air Force I just passed through Germany with a day or two layover that changed when I was an Army contractor. I was based out of Ramstein and had a house in Landstuhl.

  4. Better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war.

It is certainly a station "well earned" by you. And honestly, at least the older I get, the more I realize I value those small problems and issues that I can address rather than the larger ones I cannot.

    1. Well, I don't know about "well earned," but I'll take it. 😉

  5. Well done to The Missus for her garden work, and to you for your contributions.

"Because I can!" Indeed, you are master of your own destiny at this point, earned by your diligent labors, so make the most of it as YOU and The Missus see fit.

Travel to visit the clan, gardening, reading, writing (and arithmetic?), drumming, curmudgeoning, breakfasting with the old crew, wargaming, etc.

We here are but observers, even intruders on your endeavors and you owe us nothing. Although we owe you a lot for the entertainment and literary manna you graciously share as mood and Muse conspire to deliver it.

Your garden provides us a calm and joyful start to the day.
    Thanks!

    1. One occasionally gets tired of writing about war. The garden provides material for blogging as well as peace of mind.

That being said, I think I took the WWI story far enough, yet another vignette. I really should do a book of short stories.

  6. A few comments,
    Looking good!
That's an awfully small house you got there.....
We stay at the Coos Motor Inn on our way to Maine but I don't recall that brew being available at the Copper Pig. I'll have to keep my eyes open.

    1. That would be the "dog house" where I could get consigned if I don't mind my manners. 🙄

The Coos Brewery is 36 miles north of your inn, close enough where that IPA should be available in that vicinity I would think.

It had been a long time since I'd had an IPA and was hesitant at first, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was, as they say, not too hoppy, but hoppy enough.

    1. 17,623 square feet, so roughly 0.4 acres.

Google (and its minion Blogger) have been recalcitrant as of late.

      And thanks, drjim!

    2. So, 0.4 acres on paper, but 3.4 acres when behind a mower?

    The garden is lovely!!
