In the Air...

It's been a long week.

Here's a couple of videos to mark the end of the beginning of World War II and the beginning of the end...

And how could I not make mention of this momentous event? Probably won't be seen again in our lifetimes, perhaps never again.

To those who served in that war.

Especially those who gave the last full measure.

  1. A Polish Spit! I once bought a model Spitfire, with the intention of making it into a Seafire. But when I saw the decal sheet was for a Polish one, I knew i would have to find a different Spit for the conversion.

  2. Ah.... a day that starts with the sound of piston engines is a good day, muy bueno Sarge! I see that thirty Dakotas were in the D-Day anniversary this month.

    1. Yes, returning to that night 75 years ago. The man still has what it takes!

  4. Ironic that it started with very few battle proven airmen on our side against a vastly more experienced foe, with us rushing pilots through training and fighter aircraft off ever growing production lines - and ended with the Luftwaffe in an exactly similar situation, with teenaged rookies, scant machinery and their remaining aces
in the first of the jet fighters. Some finish. Some race.

    1. Love that first short film, watched it again yesterday. I think I posted it some years back. A great little film.

Never seen that second one before, chap came awfully close to tying the low altitude record. Can't say I blame the newscaster for his reaction, I would have said something similar!

  7. A good friend here in the condo, recently passed away, jumped that D-Day night. His 18th birthday had been the day before. Always fun driving him around for chores and Taco Bell for his long time wife (she had been a 1/Lt back then, BTW).
