Looks like our sojourn in Maryland is over.
Kids have returned, we can travel back north.
As much as I will miss being "betacked" (as Roberto puts it) by the two lads in the photo, at least the bruises will have time to heal. (And yes, there are days when it feels like "I'm getting too old for this ...")
But all things must pass.
I had a much longer post which Google decided to delete.
My hatred for software of most varieties grows by leaps and bounds. Recently I defended Windows 11 in a conversation.
That won't happen again.
These overpaid clowns change things which work just fine. Guess they skipped out on Engineering 101, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Maybe they don't teach that anymore.
Jerks.
Be seeing you.
Mugged for love, eh?
ReplyDeleteI've gotten to dislike AI Co Piolets and other nonsense.
Precisely what it is, nonsense.
DeleteHang in there Sarge, Yard Ape Time is fun time also.......:)
ReplyDeleteIt can be if the weather is nice.
Delete"These overpaid clowns change things which work just fine"
ReplyDeleteI call it the "Lookit me! Syndrome." So clever that they think all the world needs to see just how clever they are, so they go about "improving something that works just fire. "Hey! Wait! Just lookit what cool features I added - features that 99 44/100 of you will never use-But LOOKIT HOW COOL THEY ARE! Aren't I clever?" Change for the sake of change.
You've just described Google's business model.
DeleteCrusty Old TV Tech here. That observation about your grandkids reminds me of a dictum by another AF sarge. To wit, "Hey LT, you know why they call it a "Six Pack"? You can get 6 Airmen in the truck, except there's no plastic thing to keep them from getting loose and causing trouble!"
ReplyDeleteAhhh, Windoze. JL's observation is spot on. 40 years of being the recipient of the "user" end of space comm system "software" teaches that (Dictum #1) those who write requirements for code that will be used by others often have no idea how the doodad they're writing the code for is used and don't necessarily care. Dictum #2, over time, their level of care goes down in geometric proportion to the complexity of the code and price charged for said code. After the Windoze ME fiasco, the Crusty household went to Ubuntu Linux, and it seems to have been a good choice for us. Now on Linux Mint. It just works (now, after 15 years of development).
For what I do Linux won't work. Just wish Microsoft would deliver a working product and leave it be.
DeleteSarge, had a very similar Grandkid experience last week also! Makes you feel both young again and old as all get out, doesn’t it.
ReplyDeleteDetais to follow!
juvat
Bingo! Young and old at the same time.
Delete"And a good time was had by all."
ReplyDeleteThat's always a wonderful story people love to read.
Especially when it includes a picture of cute kids and WIlford Brimley.
Yeah, new software. I am dreading the day when I will be forced to give up my somewhat out of date computers and "upgrade" to Windows 11. Windows 10 is far more capable than I will ever be, as was Windows 9 and XP, and even 7. Juvat's less than optimal introduction into the alleged simplicity and joys of Apple stuff has me scared away from that option. Linux- uh, no thanks, I don't know anyone who uses that who I can beg for help when I surely will be lost. Also, my business software only play well with Microsoft, but will not play with Windows 11. Tech is great when it works, but infuriating when it does what you tell it to, instead of what you want.
JB
Often software will do what the developers think you want to do. I have no problem with a computer doing what I tell it to do. That was my career, making sure computers did what they were told with no surprises.
DeleteSarge, that is the best grandkid picture ever. Thanks for putting a smile on my face on a Sunday.
ReplyDeleteThe Windows 11 thing is something staring me down the barrel that I do not enjoy the thought of. I may try to keep this computer going as long as I can to defer that as long as I can. I am not enough of a computer person think of Linux (that I know of). Apple might even not be off the table.
I'm neither a Linux nor an Apple fan. Reasons, dontcha know.
DeleteThe fun I've had with Windows 11. Instead of just saying "We need to reboot your computer to update it" instead they do a soft-shutdown of features. Things like the time/date and power on the taskbar go missing, or websites hang up or you can't close some programs that are open (like simple game programs.) Thus forcing a reboot and they don't even tell you that they're updating. And needed disk cleanup and AVG tuneup required to get rid of excess grabage.
ReplyDeleteAnd... AVG. Great product, I don't need to be told it's working and it does the same thing as Windows. Shuts down available programs until you reboot.
Still much better than having to load your operating system when you turn on your computer.
Though I do use Libre Office as my word processor/spreadsheet program.
All software has "quirks." Some software is so poorly implemented that I'm convinced that there is evil therein.
DeleteSoftware connected to process control can be even worse. An engineer at a small coal power plant once described an oversight in their new (1980s) control software. An operator wanted to increase the forced draft fans output from 75% to 80% (near full load) and typed an "8" but missed the "0". The control software obediently dropped the fans to 8% and there was smoke billowing out of every orifice of the boiler. The software was rewritten so such drastic changes could not be inadvertently made.
DeleteA good design will go a long way to prevent stupidity in code. But good quality control is needed to prevent typos. It's hard but doable.
DeleteThe old Norton Utilities was pretty good at catching mistakes. They would ask "Do you want to do that"? Then if the answer would be unrecoverable "Do you really want to do that"?
DeleteIt wouldn't detect mistakes in the software, it could prevent you from doing something dumb on your system.
DeleteSo that's not fear in your eyes there, that's rage at the machine! The youngsters seem to find it amusing. It is always thus.
ReplyDeleteThey love beating up their elders.
DeleteRoberto with the rear naked choke! Let's get ready to rumble!
ReplyDeleteIt's an MMA term by the way
