And We're Off ... Again

Source
Headed down south for a couple of weeks, I may not post at all. Frankly, I'm getting tired of the internet. Too much "AI" and not enough actual intelligence out there. Gargle and Failbook are ruining it for me. Too much crap.

Flying cars?

When pigs fly.

Be seeing you.

Feel free to beat each other up in the comments.

  1. Well there I was sailing around Jamestown Island with my father and two other guys from the War College in something called the Round the Island Race or some such weirdo of a name for a race. I think every Shields boat in 100 miles joined us at the starting line and to the best of my recollection it took us 24 hours to sail around that stupid island and our provisions consisted of a couple of six packs of beer and one sandwich apiece because, it's just a little island. I don't believe that this was my introduction to sailing in Narraganset Bay because I had plenty of time in Mercury's and Rhodes and of course the never to be forgotten experience of sailing National 10s in December or January or both in the Newport Yacht Club madness they call frostbiting. The thing about the Natonal 10 is that it is maybe 10 feet long and built and sailed like a semi-submersible. It really is best to start with 4 or 6 kids if you mean to get into this form of racing because you'll need spares.
Still, for all of that, the sailing bug bit pretty hard and I stayed at it for a very long time and there is a boat resting in my garage waiting to be summoned onto the waters and maybe a sail to Canada because, it's just the other side of the Lake and that's hardly any distance at all and there's plenty of room aboard for a six pack and a sandwich or two.

    1. It's peaceful out there. The Missus Herself doesn't agree, she's terrified of the water. She had an older sister who drowned, her mom made sure all of the kids stayed away from water that wasn't used for cooking or bathing. Sad really.

    2. Yes it is. My grandmother was unable to swim despite having a boat docked in the Chesapeake for 35 years. My other grandmother washed ashore with another nurse and a pair of doctors when their boat foundered on the Newfoundland coast. It was a perishing good story about a very different era.

  3. Neighbours have gone on holiday. Friends of theirs have moved in to look after the house and garden. To safeguard the visitors' children our neighbours have brought all their toxic potted plants round to us. We have wondered whether we should be inspired to write an Agatha Christie whodunnit.

  4. Hope the crud you were experiencing has relented so travel is less miserable.
    Safe travels.

    1. It's better, I no longer feel like death, just death warmed over. I can travel. Of course, now The Missus Herself has it, she will be miserable but she doesn't have to drive.

  5. Have a wonderful trip, Sarge!!

Yes, the InterWeb is becoming less and less useful. The list of places I go keeps getting smaller and smaller - on the bright side, more time for actual meaningful things.

  6. LOL! Timing is everything. As I was brushing my teeth and waiting for the water to boil for to make my morning Elixir of Wakefulness, if not Life, I was contemplating what today's offering would be. "I bet he's going to do some apology for not posting. Which it tommyrot! Sarge don't owe us nuthin'!" It's fun, it's a nice way to start the mornin', but LIFE HAPPENS! Even to Sarge. And when what had been fun becomes a burden, it becomes work. As one well know riverboat pilot turned scrivner observed, "“work consists of what a body is obliged to do. And play consists of whatever a body is not obliged to do”"

So, go! Enjoy! Play! Spoil the grandkiddlings. You spent how many decades with your shoulder to the grindstone, ear to the wheel, nose to the ground? Time for you to take life on your terms, not holding to what someone else thinks you are obliged to do.

Just drop an occasional postcard. We have enough T-shirts.

    1. It has been something of a burden as of late. Much work for no recompense, other than reading the comments. Which have been sparse lately. Seems a lot of folks are on vacation.

    2. "Much work for no recompense, other than reading the comments. Which have been sparse lately." I've noticed that on other forums. Comments down considerably.

On the last 2 installments of your last story I started several comments several times, but no matter what, I couldn't get the phrasing right. Both were such excellent work that nothing seemed adequate.

    1. Closed for a bit, just me taking a break, juvat, Tuna, and Bean will, no doubt, fill the gaps.

      Nothing lasts forever.

  9. Like I said, I'm not missing my computer (much). There is a bit of freedom, felt or imagined.

  10. Safe journeys, find loves and adventures. I'm sure you will have some great tales to tell if you return.

Just be polite... that's all I ask. (For Buck)
