What other people think when they hear "warrior-monk."
What I think of when I hear "warrior monk."
I know. I'm a simple person in a complex world.
And now for a musical break, the incomparable Electric Light Orchestra...
Lyrics for "Ticket to the Moon."
When things were so uncomplicated?
I wish I could go back there again
And everything could be the same
I'll be leaving here any day soon
Yeah, I've got a ticket to the Moon
But I'd rather see the sunrise in your eyes
I'll be rising high above the Earth so soon
And the tears I cry might turn into the rain
That gently falls upon your window
You'll never know
Ticket to the Moon (ticket to the Moon)
Ticket to the Moon (ticket to the Moon)
Up to a new world shinin' bright, whoa, whoa
Soarin' madly through the mysteries that come
Wonderin' sadly if the ways that led me here
Could turn around and I would see you there
(And I would you there, waitin') standin' there
Flight leaves here today from Satellite Two
As the minutes go by, what shall I do?
I paid the fare, what more can I say? (What more can I say?)
It's just one way (only one way)
Ticket to the Moon (ticket to the Moon)
Ticket to the Moon (ticket to the Moon)
Ticket to the Moon (ticket to the Moon)
Ticket to the Moon (ticket to the Moon)
Ticket to the Moon (ticket to the Moon)
Ticket to the Moon (ticket to the Moon)
Ticket to the Moon (ticket to the Moon)
Very sad song.
And Jeff Lynne's right, at this point long-term (multi-year) exposure to lower to no gravity is basically a one-way ticket. There ain't no coming back to Mother Earth once you lose enough bone density and muscle power. Pseudo-gravity from spinning on a ship or accelerating at 1G will solve some problems, as long as one stays at roughly the equivalent of 1G or 'standard grav' as it's called in sci-fi.

Warrior clerics?

Nice. I could get into that .30 cal Browning MG.
DeleteAh.....ELO..that brings back some memories Beans, as to warrior monks.....Deus vult!
ReplyDeletePeople aren't taught that a lot of the Orders Militant were in fact forms of priesthoods and brotherhoods. Deus Vult! Got mitt Uns! Kyrie Elieson!
DeleteTry this....the various orders, such as the Dominicans, are frat rats. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DK-X-hPvNId/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
DeleteNice post, Beans! Quite a bit I did not know. Thanks for stepping up to the plate!
ReplyDeletejuvat
Glad to be of service. Looking forward to your weekly update.
DeleteThank you!

You're welcome.
DeleteBeans - When I think of warrior monks, I think of the sohei, the quasi-monastic group that was associated with Buddhist Temples in the Medieval Period of Japan through the beginning of the Edo period that ranged anywhere from ruffians to full on warriors (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C5%8Dhei).
ReplyDeleteELO always makes me happy, and that is a song I did not know of. Thank you.
Having to prepare for coming back to Earth is described in Heinlein's "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress".
Most people, even with Anime being so popular, don't know about the Japanese warrior monks and priests. I do, but I'm weirder than 'normal' people.
DeleteTicket is on ELO's "Time" album. It's a most excellent album, well worth getting.
Heinlein was a very prophetic writer. Sadly his 'Crazy Times' seems to actually be here.
So far, no structure big enough to really spin to produce pseudo-gravity has been orbited. Gemini 11 did do an experiment rotating on the end of a long tether attached to their Agena target vehicle, achieving a force of 0.00015g. And the Skylab astronauts discovered that they could run round the circumference on a ring of water tanks, their running in a circle producing a weak centrifugal force holding their feet against the tanks.
DeleteThe choices are:
Delete1. Suffer lack of gravity, which in a long trip makes one either have to rehab a bunch or stay in lower grav.
2. Go big so you can go home. Which, even with SpaceX's Starship, we can't do, yet.
3. Go fast, under constant near 1G acceleration. Which we can't do, yet, even with the current and past designs of various nuclear propulsion systems.
4. Develop the mythical 'artificial gravity.' Which requires every gravity maker to mesh with every other gravity maker otherwise the differences in gravity could potentially be disastrous.
After posting, another concern with spinning a ship (or the crew quarters within like in the movie "2001" unless it is independent of the rest of the structure like a navigational gyro) poses another interesting problem I have never seen discussed in sci-fi. In essence one has a very large gyroscope. Any thrusting outside the plane of or at right angles to the rotating mass produces interesting torque effects. The combined Apollo SM/CM/LEM modules had a devil of a time achieving what would seem to be a simple thermal passive control rotation of the stack, and it would degrade in a few hours.
DeleteWarrior-monks, religious people who are willing to defend themselves.
ReplyDeleteYep.
DeleteWell done, thou good and faithful Beans. Seriously though, thank you.
ReplyDeleteThanks. You have done so much for all of us, you should be able to be a slacker once in a while.
DeleteBeans is a great pinch hitter.
DeleteThe Expanse series has great take on how the reduced gravity might affect spacefaring society (the Belters, and to lesser extent, Martians).
ReplyDeleteOn another note, my fave tabletop game has example of futuristic Military Orders...
