Home Again, Home Again

OAFS Photo
Got on the road at roughly 0800 local. Grandsons were groggy as they've been sleeping late over their school vacation. They were still bummed out to see the grandparental units board their shuttle to return to Little Rhody. I'm going to miss seeing them every day, but we'll be back soon enough.

The ride was not bad, spotty traffic problems, usually caused by an incompetent driver playing "pace car" in the passing lane. There was an epidemic of that crap in Connecticut. Oh well, kept me from maximum warp which was probably a good thing.

Got home at 1600-ish and that included a long stop for supper and a few stops to stretch the legs, refuel, etc. So we really made good time. I'm thankful for that.

Down in Maryland it was cold, Little Rhody was colder. (See the opening photo.)

I'm not going to say I'm looking forward to summer's return, I do like the cold, but these old bones don't like it as much as they used to. (And I really can't abide really hot weather.)

But we're back at home, in one piece and ready to hibernate for a bit.

Winter is good for that.

Be seeing you.

  1. Good to hear another successful return to base Sarge and before sunset also! Around these parts we start gaining daylight in the morning beginning Tuesday at last, with the sun setting being later for several days now......:)

    1. The days are getting longer, bit by bit. But leaving well earlier than normal helped, as did it being quite cold which kept a lot of people home.

  2. my wife complains it's hot as H*ll and unbelievably humid down here in SW Florida during the summer and overcrowded with obstreperous mid-Westerners and up-yer-nose Canadians in the winters (yes! we've had lows in the 40s at night). we had the tourists during the summer and I think she forgets the days when we'd walk outside and her nice, straight hair would immediately turn into a mass of curls and we'd both begin sweating like we'd been an hour in a sauna when we lived in Manhattan and the 'burbs. this old body'd love to take a run down the slopes in Vermont, but these old bones would shatter (shudder?) at the first smell of frost.

    1. I've been in Florida in the summer, won't do that again. (He said, all the while realizing that he could not predict the future.)

  3. Sarge, Glad you had a good time with the younger generation. We’re beginning to acclimatize us to that feature that new feature in our lives ( multiple generations at the dinner table with regularity),
As to the 55mph in the left lane…a pox on they and their kind. The speed limit on the interstate down here is 75 most of the time. Unfortunately, we quite frequently have that idiot species here also. Passing on the right is authorized provided you pass with the driver window down, your left arm extended out at a 90 degree angle and your middle finger extended. If you happen to drive an 18 wheeler, that process also includes a long toot of the horn. If that doesn’t work, change lanes the include the horn along with the window/arm/finger drill explained above. That usual has the desired effect.
    Just sayin’

  4. Glad you arrived safely, Sarge.

Having been to New Home for Christmas with its delightful mid 70's weather but less delightful humidity, it is a toss up if the humidity or the cold is worse. Need to figure that out before we start making final decisions.

    1. The kids have a fireplace, now that is something I wish we had!

  5. I used to be that annoying turd that would walk around in a t-shirt and shorts and maybe sandals in anything above 20 degrees F.

Now I put on long pants, long sleeve t-shirt over a regular shirt and a heavy jacket for anything 60ish or colder. Add another layer for every 10 degrees colder. And my hands are like ice below 70 degrees.

    Karma bites...

  6. I'm curious about your fish pond. Do the fish just hibernate in the winter, die off to be replace by new hires in the spring? Any problems with predators stopping by for a free fish dinner? Or, do the semi-mythical critters you have standing sentry duy around the pond keep strangers away?
Even in winter, your yard is lovely! The Missus provides excellent guidance, I am sure, and you are good at following instructions.

    1. The fish go dormant once the temperature gets low enough, 40s and low 50s. Have occasional predation problems with cranes and egrets but the artificial birds seem to help. Also a net over the deep end and lilies at the shallow end give the fish a fighting chance.

  7. You may not be wishing for Summer, but after 10 days of rain, I might be. Both my wife and daughter have been sick, a thought-to-be-fixed roof leak returned, it's been raining every night when it's time to walk the dogs, and San Dog isn't built for proper drainage.

    1. I have had experiences with roof leaks, wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy, a supreme pain in the a$$!
