Odds & Sods¹

OAFS Photo
Bloody cold here in Little Rhody as of late, the above readings were upon arrival at Chez Sarge after a night of fine dining which followed a dermatologist appointment. (Our dermatologist works late, which is okay as she is very good.)

I should note here that the average temperature in Little Rhody at this time of year is 35°, which is a tad more comfortable than that 28° reading. Dinnae fash yersel² over that indoor temperature, the thermometer is right next to a north-facing window. As can be seen below.

The weather guessers assure us that the next week will be more like the average, in the 40s, which I can tolerate quite well, thank you very much.

Saw a movie Sunday night which I'd been looking forward to, even though I had a few quibbles with it.

From the stills I'd seen, I was impressed with the film's Tiger tank, it was the best looking replica I've ever seen. It's based on the old Soviet T-55 and has been nicely modified to look like the real thing. (The real thing can be seen in the film Fury.) It also looked pretty good on film as well, I was able to believe that it was an actual Panzerkampfwagen VI. As long as I didn't look too close ...

The uniforms weren't bad, the commander's crushed hat was nonsense, looked more like a Russian officer's cap than a German cap, don't know why they went in that direction. Odd but it was a minor thing. As was the loader's uniform which was a standard infantryman's uniform. All the other guys had spot on uniforms. Correct cut, correct piping on the lapels, etc., etc., etc. and more WWII uniform nerdiness, which I can be awfully guilty of ...

No spoilers here but ...

The plot seemed nonsensical at first: send a single tank out to rescue some colonel - a single, very big and slow, very much of a fuel hog tank - with no infantry support. But as the film progressed it started to make some sense but ...

Watch the whole thing, it's not really a tank movie but it is entertaining, sort of an "M. Night Shyamalan makes a tank movie" sort of thing. Watch it, you'll see what I mean.

I give it three stars (for reference Fury got 4.5 stars, Saving Private Ryan got 5).

Oh, I should note that if you're looking for it on Amazon, search for The Tank. Why they had to do that rename is beyond me.

Anyway, that's all I've got, weather and film. Now to watch an episode of Landman. Which is VERY entertaining.

Ciao!

¹ Odds and ends but with a British twist. Also an album by The Who.
² A Scottish phrase meaning "don't worry yourself. It's educational we are, here at The Chant.

  1. 'A Scottish phrase meaning "don't worry yourself."'

The English equivalent would be "Don't get your knickers in a twist."

  2. I've read reviews about that movie. It seems a good one.
Other tank movies "Tankers" (Russian title "Indestructible"), based on the deeds of Semyon Konovalov, who with his crew destroyed in a KV-1 16 enemy tanks, 2 armored vehicles and 8 vehicles with enemy personnel near Nizhnemityakin farm in Tarasovskoye district of Rostov region. Available on YouTube.

    1. I've seen better, but it's worth the time if you've nothing else to do.

    2. I think I like it because you initially say, "Can't have happened!" Then look into it and, yeah, it really did happen.

    3. I meant the movie I watched, but yes, the KV-1 was a monster. A single tank like the KV-1 did hold the Germans up in more than one place.

  3. Enjoy those outdoor numbers Sarge, average high here is twenty four yet we're sitting at thirty three now with.....rain.....going to have a skating rink out there if that temp drops a degree, vehicles are starting to slid off the freeways even now. Have to keep an eye out for that flick now.

  4. Gonna have to break out my Parka, I got the chills reading Sarge and Nylon's comments. It's a tad chilly here in CStat @ 66 degrees with a high expected at 80. On second thought, I might put on my swim suit and run through the sprinkler. Nah, that might start up a lynch mob of my neighbors. Got to save the Children, doncha know?
Seriously, Hang in there. Soon you'll be talking about how hot it is!

    1. Well, Texas is bound to be warm, or freezing cold, or somewhere in between. It's a big freaking state, innit?

(I drove through Lubbock in the snow to get to San Antonio in the warm sun, all in a few days.)

  5. Thanks for the movie report Sarge! I had seen a promo for this movie and was interested (and also wondered if you had seen that it was coming).

I am slightly better with the cold this year than last; bundling up and going about my business.

    1. I liked the interactions between the tank crewmen, seemed about right. The tank itself was close to the real thing, but the story itself? I would've liked an actual tank movie, but the twist in this one made it interesting.

  6. Landman is most excellent, and I've found that most content from Taylor Sheridan is the same. I'm sad that I'm almost caught up on Slow Horses with Gary Oldman (Brit Mi-6 drama), which is also most excellent.

  7. Nice weather station you got there. What brand/model is it as Mrs. Andrew is wanting one.

Just be polite... that's all I ask. (For Buck)
Can't be nice, go somewhere else...
